As with most states, Kentucky car insurance is a requirement for those who live in this state. And while obtaining affordable insurance is possible, parents should keep in mind that younger drivers tend to take more risks and often practice caution less. As a result, most auto insurance companies will charge higher rates to insure those who are under a certain age. Use these simple tips to find affordable auto insurance for young drivers.
Shop around. There are hundreds of insurance companies out there, and some of them may offer more affordable rates just to get your business. You can ask other parents with young drivers where they found an affordable policy, or you can use free internet quote sites to compare rates and find a few companies that appeal to you.
Take care when selecting the car for your child to drive. Many do not realize how big a role the make and model of car play into the cost of insurance premiums. Buy your teenager a brand new red sports car, and you could find yourself paying many times what you would pay with a slightly older and less flashy model.
Also, do not be afraid to ask insurers about special discounts that your child may qualify for. Some companies have good student discounts, meaning that if your child has a certain grade point average in school, they may qualify for a sizeable auto insurance discount. You may also be able to get a family discount if you have a family plan.
Keep in mind that adding a young driver to your plans is not always the best option. If they practice poor driving habits and get a violation or are involved in an accident, they could cause your rates to go up drastically. Consider opening up a new plan for them so that if they do have poor driving habits, it will not affect your insurance plan.
